Hexham Courant - Click for bigger imageAn article relating to a magic lantern show to be held in Acomb village. Lantern shows were extremely popular before the introduction of moving pictures in cinemas. The shows consisted of a series of slides which were projected onto a wall. The slides would tell a story, usually with an operator explaining each slides content. The Hexham Courant was first published in August 1864. In common with other provincial newspapers it provided detailed local, national and international news. The Hexham Courant is still in publication today. The Northumberland Archives Service holds many original and microfilm copies of Northumberland Newspapers.
