This extract is taken from the Doddington parish poor rate assessment for 1835. It lists those persons within Doddington parish who were responsible for maintaining the poor within their parish. An assessment was made on their property and a rate of 6 pence in the pound was raised. George Moffatt had to pay £27 10 shillings towards the maintenence of the poor in 1835. This is equivalent to approximately £1050 at today's value.
Many of the Doddington parish records are deposited with Northumberland Archives Service. Previously they were kept at the church. For many years church records were stored in the Parish Chest. This tradition dates back to medieval times. The Chest would usually be found in the vestry and kept under lock and key. All church records would be stored there. For example, baptism registers, poor relief records and churchwardens' accounts would all be found within the Chest.
