This is an extract from the Hexham Union Application and Report Book 1836 - 1838, which includes the parish of Corbridge. The book identifies individuals who were in receipt of financial assistance as a result of their particular circumstances.
As a result of The Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 groups of parishes that had previously been responsible for caring for the poor in their own area were joined together to form unions. Ovingham formed part of the Hexham Union. One of the responsibilities of the Unions was to administer payments to those who were in receipt of financial assistance. Unfortunately, many of the records of the Northumberland Boards of Guardians cannot be traced. However, Northumberland Archives Service does hold a number of records for the Hexham Union.
