This is an extract from the 1881 Census Returns for Northumberland which includes Allendale.
Living at Dawson Place is William Holmes together with his domestic servant. He was the head of the household, unmarried and was 61 years old. His occupation was that of a clerk(out of employment), and he was born in Allendale.
Census Returns are an excellent source when doing family history. The Northumberland Record Office holds microfilm and microfiche copies of the Northumberland Census Returns from 1841 to 1901.
