Allendale - Printed Material

An article relating to the May day Hirings. This was the annual event when those seeking employment on the land would congregate in towns to be hired by local farm owners. The Hexham Courant was first published in August 1864. In common with other provincial newspapers it provided detailed local, national and international news. The Hexham Courant is still in publication today. The Northumberland Archives Service holds many original and microfilm copies of Northumberland Newspapers.
