Hexham Courant - Click for bigger imageAn article relating to the re-occurance of smallpox in Acomb village. Smallpox was the major killer disease of the 17th and 18th centuries. However, towards the end of the 18th century Edward Jenner discovered a form of vaccination that led to the eventual eradication of the disease. The Hexham Courant was first published in August 1864. In common with other provincial newspapers it provided detailed local, national and international news. The Hexham Courant is still in publication today. The Northumberland Archives Service holds many original and microfilm copies of Northumberland Newspapers.
